Reclaiming Our Schools: Education for and by the People
Conference Aims
Submission Guidelines
We invite K-12 teachers, students, parents, community-based educators, activists/organizers and others who share our aims to submit proposals in one of the following areas:
1. The Classrooms We Deserve
These sessions focus on culturally relevant and social justice curriculum, liberatory and humanizing teaching and assessment, and other topics related to learning and teaching. K-12 or community-based sessions are welcome. For example: Democratizing classroom discussions, Exploring social justice themes through drama.
2. The School Structure We Deserve
These sessions focus on school-wide decision-making, creating positive school climate, parent and community participation, professional development and other ways to improve teaching. For example: Parent organizing for school reform, Circle Work for Restorative Justice.
3. The School System We Deserve
These sessions focus on: national, state and city policies that block the schools we want and how we can start to change those policies. For example: the hybrid school committee campaign, Invest In Our Communities, the charter school cap campaign, high-stakes testing.
4. The Society We Deserve
We acknowledge that education for liberation is not just about schools and systems but that these are for a bigger purpose. If your workshop falls outside the above categories but aligns with the conference aims, please send us a proposal!
We particularly seek sessions that:
Got ideas, but you're overwhelmed by writing a workshop proposal? Check out our Open Sessions! At this year’s conference we would like to provide more space for attendees to connect with one another and share knowledge, experiences, and strategies around their particular area of interest. In addition to the regular workshops, there will time and space set aside for less formal dialogue on both pre-set topics and spontaneous topics that come up the day of the conference. If you are interested in proposing a topic for an open session, please email: [email protected]

- Facilitate dialogue, share resources, and build strategy among those interested in learning and teaching about education for liberation
- Develop youth leadership and youth voice in education
- Build an education for liberation movement that combines the visions of youth, communities, families, and teachers

- Are Interactive & participatory: please make it clear in your proposal how you will provide opportunities for participation of attendees. We encourage a workshop & discussion style rather than lecture.
- Promote youth leadership in the planning and leading of workshops.
- Take into account our aim of engaging youth, families, communities, and educators together
- Are designed for a diverse audience.
- We encourage presenters to consider incorporating the arts.
